Messi Named FIFA’s Best Player, Ronaldo: I Don’t Believe in It Anymore…

The victory of Lionel Messi in the 2023 FIFA awards has sparked controversy, with Cristiano Ronaldo admitting that he no longer believes in such individual honors.

Messi secured the FIFA Best Player 2023 award in a ceremony held a week ago, surpassing his closest rival, Erling Haaland (Manchester City/Norway). The iconic Argentine player’s triumph, however, raised eyebrows as Messi didn’t shine as brightly throughout the past year. The 37-year-old footballer failed to clinch prestigious trophies with PSG before moving to the United States to join Inter Miami.

In contrast, Haaland achieved significant success with Manchester City. Haaland scored 52 goals by the end of the 2022/23 season, inspiring the Citizens to win the treble, including the UEFA Super Cup.

The last time Cristiano Ronaldo won a major individual award such as the Ballon d’Or or FIFA was in 2017 when he was still with Real Madrid. Since then, Messi has won the award three times. Ronaldo suggests that Messi doesn’t deserve the accolade due to his performance.

“I think, for certain reasons, these awards have lost their credibility,” he said after winning three trophies at the Globe Soccer awards.

“We need to analyze the performances throughout the season. I’m not saying Messi doesn’t deserve it, or Haaland, or even Mbappe. I just no longer believe in these awards,” continued the Portuguese football megastar.

“And it’s not just because I won at the Globe Soccer. But, there are facts, there are numbers, and numbers don’t lie. They can’t take this trophy away from me because it’s a reality. So I’m even happier because the numbers are facts,” Ronaldo stated, as reported by the Daily Mail.
